Hungarian foreign policy to continue to open – the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in connection to the UN Security council election.

Hungary’s hopes of becoming a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the period 2012-2013 ended when the country was eliminated from the contenders in the General Assembly vote. Besides Hungary, Slovenia and Azerbaijan also applied to the position available to the Eastern European Group, the competition between the latter will continue in the coming days. We wish to thank all the countries that have supported and voted for Hungary.

The General Assembly proved to be a fierce competition, and confirmed our expectations that the process has a number of uncertainties and inherent unpredictability. Our campaign was launched with a considerable delay, which proved to be caught up in spite of our best efforts. Nevertheless, it was a well thought out, clear, positive and efficient campaign that fitted well into the process of Hungary opening towards a global foreign policy.

The result of the voting does not stand in the way of Hungary’s commitment to continue its global opening; we remain sensitive to global issues and continue our active participation in other UN forums.
