The award was presented by Mr. János Martonyi Foreign Minister of Hungary, on behalf of Mr. János Áder, President of Hungary.

Mr. Tibor Tóth, Executive Secretary of the Vienna based Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty was presented with the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit of Hungary on Monday.


Mr. Tóth received the prestigious award for his outstanding diplomatic activities over several decades in the field of nuclear, biological, chemical and conventional arms control and disarmament.

The award was presented by Mr. János Martonyi Foreign Minister of Hungary, on behalf of Mr. János Áder, President of Hungary. In his speech Mr. Martonyi praised the UN diplomat, and stated that Mr. Tóth professional success sets an example for younger diplomats. 
Mr. Tóth, as Executive Secretary of the CTBTO is the highest ranking Hungarian diplomat, who has held various positions in the family of UN organizations. Since 2005 he has been Executive Secretary of the Preparatory Commission of the CTBT, which bans all forms of nuclear explosions. His re-election as the Executive Secretary in 2008 proved not only his achievements but was also a symbolic recognition for Hungary, stated Mr. Balázs Csuday, Ambassador of Hungary to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Vienna.


Prior to his appointment as Executive Secretary, Mr. Tóth was accredited as Ambassador of Hungary to the UN in Geneva and later in Vienna. In 1990 he was Hungary’s chief negotiator for the Chemical Weapons Convention and was one of the key members of the discussions that led to the Canadian-Hungarian Open Sky Conference in 1990. Between 1992 and 2004 he was the President of the negotiations on the implementations and monitoring of the Convention on the Prohibition of Biological Weapons.
