Publicated on: September 3, 2015

Dr István Bondár, senior seismologist at the Research Centre for Astronomy and Earth Sciences of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences has attended the Preparatory Commission Working Group B 45th Session as a technical expert for the Hungarian delegation. Dr Bondár has recently been elected to be the Chair of the Working Group 4 (CTBTO Relations) of the International Federation of Digital Seismograph Networks (FDSN), a global organisation representing seismic network operators and promoting free and open data exchange. Many IMS seismic stations also members of the FDSN and the coordination between the CTBTO and the FDSN is important for both organisations. As the new chair of the FDSN Working Group IV Dr Bondár met the Executive Secretary, Dr Lassina Zerbo in his office and discussed the future cooperation between the CTBTO and the FDSN.

During the Working Group B session Dr Bondár attended the Waveform Expert Group meeting. The Waveform Expert Group has listened to PTS progress reports about the work in waveform quality control, as well as presentations from various NDCs and the PTS about the preliminary implementation and validation of the Regional Seismic Travel Times global upper mantle velocity model that will provide improved travel-time predictions for local and regional seismic phases.

Dr Bondár will participate the NDC Capacity Building Workshop and Regional Seismic Travel Time (RSTT) Training, 7 - 11 September 2015, Costa Rica to provide training in the use of RSTT travel-time predictions in iLoc, the successor of the ISC location algorithm.
