Ambassador's welcome

Dear Reader!

Welcome to the updated website of the Permanent Mission of Hungary to the UN in Vienna.

The international organizations in Vienna play an important role in finding solutions to certain tasks of global nature. The biggest of more than a dozen of Offices of the UN family in Vienna are, just to name a few: the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO), the Office for Combating Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and the Office for Outer Space Activities (UNOOSA).

This incomplete list demonstrates that multilateral diplomacy in Vienna encounters various global challenges, including the concept of modern security linked with achieving international development goals. The Vienna International Centre (VIC) hosting the organisations was inaugurated on 23rd of August 1979. The United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV) thus became the third major centre of the UN, after New York and Geneva. Relations between the international organisations and Member States are maintained via diplomats and experts of the permanent missions accredited to the various organisations.

The International Atomic Energy Agency bears the greatest effect on international politics of all the international organisations in Vienna. The IAEA is responsible for nuclear safety and security and through the special safeguards system verifies the implementation of obligations of states under the NPT (Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty). In the aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear disaster the role of the IAEA in international coordination in the world wide UN system became more significant. Hungary is a member of the Board of Governors (BoG), the main political decision making body of the Agency for a period of 2 years from September 2011.

Our participation in the BoG is especially relevant in the light of the planned expansion of the Hungarian Nuclear Power Plant located in Paks. This short introduction is merely to provide a quick insight to our wide ranging work connecting us closely not only with various international fora but also with different offices of the Hungarian administration. I trust that our website caters for all relevant information of public interest in relation to our work. I hope you will find our website useful,
